The determination of steroid hormone receptors has become widely used in the management of hormone-dependent cancers. Individuals whose tumors contain estrogen receptor are more likely to respond to endocrine manipulation than those whose tumors are estrogen receptor poor. Estrogen Receptor (ER) modulates cellular events by binding Estrogen Response Elements (ERE) when bound to estrogen in dimers. This results in the transcription of a number of proteins, including ER. Protein synthesis occurs in the cytoplasm, after which ER associates with chaperone proteins and is translocated to the nuclear membrane. The ER protein is translocated into the nucleus through localization of ATP. This antibody stains the nucleus of receptor positive cells.
